What Is the Turnitin Similarity Score? A Plain Reading

The similarity score is a percentage of your paper that overlapped with sources in the index. That is the whole definition. Everything else people pile onto it is folklore.
It is not an AI score. It is not a grade. It is not “anything under 15% is safe.” Courses set their own habits, and some of those habits are folklore too.
If you mixed up similarity with AI writing, you are not alone. Forums treat them as one blob. Software companies sometimes put both badges on one screen. They are still two measurements.
This page is the reading guide. DetectGPT does not produce a similarity score. It produces an AI writing score. Different needle. The wider path is how Turnitin works.

How to read the percentage
Open the sources. A high number driven by a bibliography is not the same as a high number driven by a stolen paragraph. The badge cannot tell you which you have. The list can. That list is the heart of how the Turnitin plagiarism checker works. Purdue’s paraphrasing guide is still the cleanest explanation of why overlap and original thought are not the same job.
Quoted methods sections in lab reports pile up. So do shared prompts. Instructors who know the assignment can see that. A raw number cannot.
Color bands on the report are a legend, not a moral scale. Red is “a lot of overlap,” not “expel this person.” What blue, green, and yellow mean on Turnitin is the chart.
Filters that change the number without changing the paper
Exclude quotes. Exclude bibliography. Exclude small matches. Each toggle can swing the percentage by a lot. Two instructors, two toggles, two stories about the same file.
If you are arguing about a score, ask which filters were on. Otherwise you are comparing different measurements.
Leave the AI indicator out of this number
The AI writing indicator is a style classifier. Similarity is copying. A ChatGPT essay with no sources can look clean on similarity and loud on AI. Both can appear among Turnitin features. They still are not one number.
DetectGPT only does the style job. It will not invent a similarity score. If you need that, you need the campus report or a public plagiarism scanner.
Chasing a low AI number will not fix a copied paragraph. Rewriting a model paragraph will not fix a missing citation.
What percent is acceptable?

Ask the syllabus. Ask last term’s survivors only as gossip, not as law. Do not crowd-source a magic number from a forum that has never seen your prompt.
Turnitin® itself has been cautious about tiny AI percentages. Similarity is a different statistic, but the same advice holds: small numbers are noisy, large blocks of match are not.
How to lower a score that is actually a problem
Cite. Quote with marks. Rewrite from notes, not from the PDF in a split screen. Delete the assignment sheet you accidentally pasted.
If the match is your own prior paper, ask whether self-citation is required. Some courses call that recycling. The software will still match it.
A long quote from a statute, a hymn, or a methods cookbook can dominate a short assignment. Tell the instructor before they guess. Surprise is what makes a similarity score feel like an accusation.
