How Does Turnitin Work? Similarity, AI, and the Assignment Dropbox
August 26, 2026
Turnitin® sits on an assignment. You upload a file. The platform checks overlap against its index and, if the school turned it on, estimates how AI-like the writing looks.
Instructors see a dashboard. Students often see a receipt. That mismatch is why the product feels like a black box even when the mechanics are ordinary.
This is the path a paper takes, from dropbox to report. DetectGPT is not that path. It is a public AI writing check you can run without a seat license. The plagiarism-only walkthrough is how the Turnitin plagiarism checker works.
If you only remember one split from this page, remember it: similarity is copying. The AI indicator is style. They can disagree.
Check a draft on DetectGPT
If the draft came from ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Gemini, paste it here or drop in a public page URL and we'll score how much of it still sounds like a model, with a 3,000-word cap and no account in the way. We aren't Turnitin and we don't search a paper archive, so treat this as a self-check on rhythm rather than an official campus report.

| Factor | Quick answer |
|---|---|
| Entry point | LMS assignment, not a public paste box |
| Similarity | Overlap with the index |
| AI indicator | Optional, instructor-facing, separate number |
| Student view | Limited, by school settings |
| File types | Docs and PDFs, depending on the course |
| DetectGPT | Public AI style check, not the dropbox |
The path of a submission
The instructor enables Turnitin® on a dropbox in Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or a similar LMS. You submit a doc, PDF, or whatever the assignment allows. The file is parsed into text.
That text is compared with the index. A similarity report is stored on the assignment. If AI writing detection is enabled for that institution, a second process scores style. How long that takes is its own queue: how long does Turnitin take. Instructors in Canvas have been documenting the extra LMS hop for years; one example is Instructure’s note on Canvas and Turnitin.
Resubmits may overwrite or stack, depending on settings. Some courses allow one preview. Many lock the file at the deadline and do not show you a thing.
Two numbers, two jobs
Similarity is copying. The AI writing indicator is style. A paper can be 4% similar and still look generated. The reverse is also true: a heavily cited literature review can look “similar” and fully human. What is the Turnitin similarity score is the overlap badge only. Does Turnitin detect ChatGPT is the style badge.
People mash the two together in panic. Read the label on the report before you rewrite the whole week.
Turnitin® has said low AI percentages are noisy, which is why some views show a star instead of a number. That is a humility setting, not a loophole.
What instructors see that you might not
Source lists, side-by-side matches, filters, and the AI indicator. Comments in Feedback Studio. A roster of who submitted on time. Those sit among the features of Turnitin.
You might see a percentage in the LMS grade area. You might see nothing. Asking “can I have a similarity preview?” is a normal question. Asking “can I have the AI number?” may get a no. That is still a policy, not a conspiracy.
Where the machine stumbles
Scanned PDFs, images of text, some slide decks, and code in screenshots. Heavily templated lab reports. Shared legal language. Translated sources.
Second-language writing that is careful and even can look more “AI” than a messy native draft. That is a known complaint, not a rumor. It is one reason a detector should stay a signal.
What you can run before the dropbox
You cannot open the school’s private index. You can read your own quotes. You can run an AI writing checker. You can visit the writing center. Can students use Turnitin for free outside that dropbox? Almost never.
DetectGPT is the AI self-check: paste up to 3,000 words or a homepage URL, get a percentage and highlighted lines. Independent. Not affiliated with Turnitin®.
Do not submit a DetectGPT screenshot as a substitute for the assignment. Do use it to find the paragraph that still sounds like a model.
FAQs
- How does Turnitin work?
- Submit through the course. It compares text to an index and may add an AI writing indicator. Instructors read the report.
- Does Turnitin store my paper?
- Often yes, in the institutional archive, unless the school set a different option. Ask your instructor if that matters to you.
- Can DetectGPT show me my Turnitin® score?
- No. Different product. Use it as a draft pass for AI style only.
- How long does a report take?
- Minutes in a normal queue. Longer at deadline pile-ups or with odd files.
- Can I opt out of the archive?
- Sometimes, if the school offers a repository setting. That is an instructor or admin choice, not a student toggle on the public web.
- Does it check images?
- Not as a full OCR product in the way you might hope. Put the words in the file as text.
The bottom line
Know which door you are walking through. Campus dropbox is official. DetectGPT is practice for AI tone.
Keep versions of the paper. Policy still sits with the course.
