How to Read an AI Writing Score: What the Percentage Is (and Is Not)
September 7, 2026
If you needed a self-check tonight, DetectGPT is the free AI writing checker. An AI writing score is a share of the finished draft that still sounds like a language model, not a courtroom probability that you opened ChatGPT, and mixing those two ideas is how a 40% badge becomes a rumor about misconduct.
Students see a number and hear a verdict. Instructors see the same number and hear a confession. Writers see it and hear a client about to bounce the invoice. The software is doing none of that. It is counting even sentences, safe wording, and a flat rhythm on the page you pasted.
You can use the number without worshipping it. Read the highlighted lines, keep your facts, and rewrite the stiff parts in a voice you can defend out loud. DetectGPT shows that report in a browser, with no school login and a 3,000-word cap.
This guide covers what the percentage measures, how DetectGPT, Turnitin®, and ZeroGPT disagree, where false alarms come from, and a simple way to act on a score. The campus version of the same panic is does Turnitin detect ChatGPT.
Check a draft on DetectGPT
If the draft came from ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Gemini, paste it here or drop in a public page URL and we'll score how much of it still sounds like a model, with a 3,000-word cap and no account in the way. We aren't Turnitin and we don't search a paper archive, so treat this as a self-check on rhythm rather than an official campus report.

How to treat the bands on DetectGPT
Under about 20% is a weak signal. Plenty of careful human writing lives there, especially lab reports and second-language English that stays tidy. Do not treat a low number as a pass you can wave at an instructor.
Twenty to fifty is mixed. Some passages still drone. Read them out loud. Yellow is mild, orange is louder, red is the stiffest. Start with red.
Over fifty, a lot of the draft still talks like a model. Keep the facts. Change the voice. Can Turnitin be wrong is the same warning on the campus side: a high badge can still be a false alarm, and a low badge can still miss an edited chat.
Where the number lies
Short scraps are noise, which is why DetectGPT asks for at least 50 words. Formulaic methods paragraphs, citation-heavy literature reviews, and even prose from a careful non-native writer all share the “safe next word” pattern a model also likes.
Paraphrase tools rarely wipe the signal. Swapping synonyms keeps the skeleton. Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT if you paraphrase is often yes for that reason, and DetectGPT will still mark the even lines.
If a grade hangs on the result, keep dated drafts and be able to talk about the paragraph. A percentage cannot do that for you.
What to do after you get a score
Paste the draft into DetectGPT, or drop a public URL if the words already live on a page. Read the percentage, then the highlights. Rewrite the marked lines in the voice you would use at a desk, not the voice a chatbot uses in a FAQ.
If the problem is overlap with public pages rather than tone, that is the free plagiarism checker, a different tab and a different job.
If the sentences are still stiff after you know which ones they are, HumanizeAIText is the rewrite step from the same company. DetectGPT tells you where. HumanizeAIText is the pass that tries to make those lines sound like a person.
FAQs
- What is a good AI writing score?
- There is no official cutoff. Scores under about 20% are noisy on DetectGPT. Your course or client policy is the real rule. Do not chase 0%.
- Will DetectGPT match Turnitin or ZeroGPT?
- No. Checkers do not share one percentage. Use DetectGPT as a comparable style check, then edit.
- Does a high score prove I used ChatGPT?
- No. It says the prose looks machine-made. Careful human writing can look even. Heavily edited model writing can look mixed.
- Is DetectGPT free?
- Yes. No account, no school login, 3,000 words per run. Paste text or analyze a public URL.
- Where should I run the check?
- On the DetectGPT homepage. That is the AI writing checker. Plagiarism overlap is a separate page.
The bottom line
Read the percentage as a map of stiff lines, not as a verdict, then rewrite the parts you could not say out loud in a hallway without sounding like a brochure.
Keep a copy of each version so you can show the work if someone asks how the draft got there.
DetectGPT is the free AI writing checker for that job.
