The report
What a teacher actually gets from the score
The percentage is the share of the draft that still sounds generated. The colors point at the sentences that pulled that number up. That is enough to ask a student to walk through a paragraph, explain a source, or show an earlier version. It is not enough to decide who wrote the paper, because the checker never saw the writing process.
A very correct student, including many writers who are not using their first language, can produce the same even prose a model produces. A student who generated a draft and then rebuilt it can also land low. Both outcomes are reasons to look at the lines and the rest of the file, not reasons to skip that look.
In class
A safer way to use an AI detector on student work
Start with the highlighted text, not the headline number. Compare it with writing the student has already turned in. Ask them to explain the claim without the essay in front of them. If your school already runs an originality report, read that separately, because overlap and AI-like tone are different findings.
DetectGPT will not replace the dropbox, and it will not match a campus indicator number for number. It is an independent check you can run before a meeting. Can Turnitin be wrong? is worth reading before any single detector becomes the whole case.

Should a student be penalized from this score alone?
No. A detector score is not proof of authorship. False positives and false negatives are both normal. Use drafts, sources, and the student's explanation alongside the highlights.
Does DetectGPT see edit history?
No. It scores the text you paste. It cannot open a Google Doc, a Word version history, or a chatbot transcript.
Is this a Turnitin replacement for class?
No. It is an independent writing check. It is not affiliated with Turnitin®, and it does not search a school's private paper database.
