How to check an essay without treating the score as a verdict
Paste a full section rather than one sentence. A single line does not give the checker enough rhythm to score, and a 4,000-word paper needs to be split so each run stays under 3,000 words. Read the marked passages first. A high percentage means a chunk of the essay still sounds generated. It does not mean a misconduct case, and it does not name the model.
Formulaic five-paragraph essays, and some writing from people who learned English in a very correct register, can share the evenness a detector is looking for. That is a known limit, not a secret judgment about the writer. If a paragraph is yours and it lit up, rewrite it the way you would say it out loud, then run that section again.

Can I check a whole essay?
Yes, up to 3,000 words per run. Longer papers should be split into coherent sections rather than random chunks.
Does a high score mean the essay was written by AI?
No. It means a share of the prose still looks machine-made. False positives and false negatives both happen. Use the highlights as a review list, not as proof of authorship.
Will this match my school's Turnitin score?
Do not expect the same number. DetectGPT is an independent checker. It is not Turnitin®, and it does not see the campus archive. The official indicator, if your school turned it on, is still inside the assignment.
Is there a minimum length?
Use at least 50 words. A sentence or a title is too short to score honestly.
